How can I tell if I'm logged into Novell? When you're already in Windows but you aren't sure if you are logged into the
network, you can check without having to log off or restart your machine. Most
often there is a large red "N" icon in the system try (bottom right of your
screen).
Right-clicking this icon will display a small menu. the 2nd selection from the
top is "Netware Connections". This will display a list of the trees and servers
you are connected to. It is a good idea to hit the 'refresh' button to make sure
it is not displaying old information. If you do not see anything in the window
at all, you are not connected to the network & you must try to log in again or
contact us.

What is Spy-ware and Ad-ware ? How can I get rid of it ?
Spy-ware and Ad-ware (tracking software) is technology that helps its
creator/distributor gain knowledge about the targeted user's machine.
It is mostly used by advertisers to find out where the targeted user's interest
lie so that the user will be faced with advertisements that cater to their
interest. Most often the user does not know that the spy-ware has been installed
on their PC until they are faced
with countless popup or faulty programs. Spy-ware/ad-ware is generally received
b/c of clicking deceptive advertisement boxes and popup. Its always a good policy not to download or say "yes" to something if you are
unsure of where it came. If you’d like to make a change to your computer’s
performance, please go ahead and contact us. In our experience, malware can take
several hours to remove. Additionally, no removal process we have used has been
shown to completely effective. Therefore, our current official policy is to take
a computer and reinstall Windows if we find malware on the machine.

What's the difference b/w direct, IP, and NDPS printing ?
Direct printing is basically your PC going straight to the printer, often
connected by a USB or parallel cable.
IP printing is something our team sets up in certain situations when we use a
print server b/w a small network of PCs and printer(s). we basically shoot the
print job from your PC over to the IP (Internet Protocol) address that the
server has been given, and the server sends to the job to the printer.
NDPS (Netware Distributed Print Services) printing is a way of printing we use
with the Novell network, typically instated when there is a large network
printer that many users
frequent in the divisions. We have a long listing on NDPS printers that we are
able to
manage remotely from our office. You must be logged into the network when
attempting
to print from an NDPS printing.

How can I create new Windows accounts on my computers ? How can I add & remove
rights from users ?
First of all, it’s a good idea to have a plan of exactly why you need another
Windows account and how you plan for it to be used. If accounts are created
without proper
passwords and/or security, problems can arise. You must have administrative
rights
in your account in order to make more users.
To make a windows account, first right-click the My Computer icon. Click
“Manage”.
The Computer Management window will come up. Now click on ‘Local Users and
Groups’.
After clicking the users folder, you can right-click in the white space of the
right window (the same window where all the other users are listed). This will
bring up a little box with an option to create a “New User…”
Enter the necessary info, and be sure to create a easy-to-remember password.
To set the rights for this user, right-click their icon in “Computer
Management”.
Clicking “Properties” will bring up a box with 3 tabs in the top. Click on the
“member of” tabs. Here you can “Add” or “Remove” rights. When choosing to add
rights, you will get
a ‘select groups’ window. In the bottom left you will see the “Advanced” button.
Here you can click “Find now” to browse the list of groups you have on your
machine. When you have found the group you choose to add the user to, highlight
it, then click “OK”. Your user is then given rights associated with the specific group you just added
them to. It is necessary to mention that creating a Windows accounts simply
gives you access to the PC itself, not to our Novell network. For Novell
questions, give us a call at 828-4841.

Why are there 2 separate passwords to Lotus Notes ?
The first password you’re prompted with is to gain access to the application
itself,
the second is to gain entry into the Notes Instant Messaging service, which
many
of our users don’t use on a regular basis, if at all. The latter can be
bypassed, allowing
the user to work with the Notes program sans the IM capability. To receive your
Lotus
Notes password if it has been forgotten, you can call the AIT helpdesk at 828-8240.

- What steps are involved in "redoing" my machine ?
When we take your PC to be "redone", we are going by a specific set of steps
that configure your machine to run at optimum performance as determined by its
hardware. First, we make a backup of your hard drive so no data is lost. Then we
format your hard drive, returning it to its stock settings. This clears out
problems and faulty settings that were previously on your machine, one of the
major causes of your problem. We then load back the image (or copy) we made onto
your fresh machine. (Programs cannot be copied, they are installed. If programs
were installed without us, you will have a chance to get those back once the PC
is ready for use.) We install the default programs and take care to load the
proper and up-to-date virus and ad-ware/spy-ware protection. Once the PC
is safe to connect to the internet, we download and install all updates
available, most often for your version of Windows and Office. The bench time we
spend on your PC often depends on the initial problem.
